I revisited the painting a couple of days later with a fresh approach so the I could see what needed to be done. To begin with I had ignored the background because I was unsure of what to do about it, all I knew was that I didn't want to paint what I saw in the room at the time as I thought this might distract from the object itself. I decided to make the background quite tonal, but it ended up being very midtone.
